The Carlyle Wedding Venue

I knew Tyler and Hershel’s wedding was going to be amazing! I first met these two during their engagement session and they brought some of their family. After the engagement session, I was even more excited for the wedding.

Getting To Know Tyler and Hershel

How did the two of you meet?

Growing up in Brooklyn, it was inevitable for Tyler and Hershel to cross paths. Between numerous high school events and mutual friends, it was a surprise that the future lovebirds did not officially meet until Tyler toured the University of Hartford campus. Tyler, who was considering enrolling at the University, was introduced to Hershel by a mutual friend. Though the exchange was brief, it served as the memory that would spark their courtship five years later…

It was New Years 2015 when Tyler and Hershel would cross paths again. This time, they were tasked with figuring out how and where they met before. “You look familiar…Where do I know you from? Did you go to Ford? Howard University? Is it Saint Paul’s Community Baptist Church?…” The questions continued until Hershel remembered their brief exchange in the hallways of Hartford University. Hershel quickly realized that this second encounter was no mistake and began his consistent pursuit of Tyler. Eight months later, he was able to secure their first date to Coney Island Amusement Park. Since the success of their first date, the couple have been inseparable, putting God first in any and all things they do.

What did you do for your first date?

The couple’s first date took place at Coney Island Luna Park. Between Hershel’s wittiness and Tyler’s quirkiness, there was no room for the couple to be nervous. They took a stroll down the boardwalk, competed in a go-kart race, and spoke for hours about their Jamaican upbringing and common interests. Tyler said, “In addition to the amazing conversation, Hershel made me laugh so much and was the ultimate gentleman. He made chivalry cool again.” For Hershel, “It was Tyler guzzling two bottles of water in less than 30 seconds. I’ll admit, it was scorching hot outside, but at that moment, I knew she was going to be herself no matter what.”

Who proposed and how?

After six years of love, laughter, and countless memories, Tyler and Hershel decided to start their lives together in Georgia. Before moving into their new home, Hershel orchestrated the proposal of a lifetime, rallying close friends and family to support their union. Hershel planned a staycation in New York City for the couple to “recharge from the stressors of moving.” After a beautiful lunch, the couple enjoyed the panoramic views of New York City. Like many, the couple wanted to capture the scenic views of the city with a picture. “Excuse me, can you take a picture of us?” Hershel asked a stranger. As the couple posed for the picture, Tyler felt Hershel pull away from the pose, only to find him kneeling on one knee. Tyler, ecstatic by the perfection of Hershel’s proposal, said “Yes!”.

What made you select the Carlyle for your wedding?

We loved the character and charm of the Dekalb History Museum. The marble tiles and grand windows complement the vision of our wedding so perfectly. We wanted a venue that felt intimate, romantic, and welcoming.

Lastly, when people reflect on your wedding, what do you want them to say?

We want our guests to feel the presence of God, the unconditional love of our union, and how much of a good time we are. Our guests are apart of us and have experienced the magnitude of our relationship.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
